U.S.S. Shanev
Da Vinci-class Sector Patrol Escort
Starship Registry NCC-93763
USS Shanev is a Da Vinci-class sector patrol escort currently in service with Starfleet, under the command of Mia Vesani. The ship, newly-commissioned as of 2422, is listed as a sector patrol vessel but is rated for flexible operations as an escort corvette in concert with exploration convoys. Lacking scientific facilities of her own beyond basic sensors, the Shanev is part of a line of well-equipped combat escorts designed to protect Federation interests from a range of threats.
History
The Shanev is a new escort, laid down in 2421 at Utopia Planitia as part of the initial run of the new Da Vinci escort class. The ship is named for Chief Petty Officer Shanev sh’Raeth, an Andorian Starfleet enlistee decorated posthumously for heroism during the Dominion War.
Work on Shanev proceeded with few complications. Initial trials took place in Saturn orbit before the ship was assigned crew and taken over by CMDR Mia Vesani, formerly captain of the border patrol ship USS Aures. With Aures and other ships of that vintage of Steamrunner then going into mothballs after more than 60 years of service, a few of the ship’s officers transferred to the Shanev as well, though the majority were reassigned to other billets.
Shanev underwent final shakedown in late June of 2422, transiting from Earth to Risa for a brief layover at the tail end of the Lohlunat Festival, before receiving assignment to the standing defensive force at Starbase 514. The ship laid over at Deep Space 9 en route to her new assignment.
Equipment
Shanev is a mixed-armament escort equipped with roughly standard armaments for a ship of the Da Vinci class.
The ship’s heaviest weapons are four forward-firing heavy cannons, two banked into the leading edge of the ventral saucer, two more visible beneath the deflector. Each cannon is capable of spooling up into a high-output gatling emitter, enabling heavy firepower to be directed on a target with a high sustained burst rate. These weapons are supplemented by a pair of directional-launching torpedo tubes banked into the forward “tower” section of the hull, typically carrying quantum torpedoes. The torpedo tubes have a high rate of rotation and can be fired a full 90 degrees to port or starboard. These heavy forward-field weapons are supplemented by four light phaser beam arrays, two on the ventral saucer and two on the dorsal, allowing for a full field of coverage around the ship.
The ship is equipped with redundant auto-modulating shield grids, with the highest degree of redundancy covering the forward shield arc. Defensive maneuverability is provided by high-yield Mitsubishi-Thylliash impulse engines and fine-tuned reaction control and maneuvering thrusters. These thrusters enable extremely high acceleration and fine maneuverability at sublight speeds. Defensive capability is enhanced by integrated hull image refractors capable of briefly concealing the ship from hostile fire.
Despite a relatively small displacement, Shanev features a well-equipped engineering department with a high degree of systems integration. The use of bio-neural gel packs and a relatively flexible computer architecture enables crew to implement unorthodox system “patches” in relatively short order. Systems may be shifted easily into interlinked processor modes, enabling different parts of the ship’s computer to support other functions when their primary role isn’t needed. This systems implementation model is consistent with the “Miracle Worker” subtype of vessel developed by the Starfleet Corps of Engineers.
Shanev's recreational systems are fairly modest and not designed for long-duration voyages. The vessel has a single holosuite, and most enlisted crew are obliged to share bunks. A common recreational lounge is provided on Deck 7 starboard, known colloquially as the Lower Deck, roughly analogous to a low-budget bar minus the barkeeper. It features mainly a few tables and chairs, some minimal decor and common replimat infrastructure, providing crew a space to relax, converse and watch the starlines go by.
Regular operations
As a relatively small ship, Shanev's officer corps numbers no more than ten people. Aside from the Commanding, Executive and Second Officer, the ship’s command structure is broken down into four departments: Tactical, Engineering, Operations and Medical. There is no dedicated Science department due to the specific nature of the ship’s mission and the lack of space for sophisticated sensor payloads; while a small number of enlisted science personnel are carried, they are selected mainly for astrometrics expertise and report via the Operations department alongside the occasional science generalist. The Security function is similarly housed as a sub-reporting structure within the Tactical department, with the Deputy Tactical Officer acting as Chief of Security in most cases. The ship’s security team is relatively small and mainly equipped for away team escort, shipboard military policing, intruder intercept and general mission security.
In typical operation, Shanev functions on three eight-hour shifts: Alpha shift headed by the CO, Beta by the XO and Gamma by the SO or other officer. In emergency situations or during expected critical contact and engagement events, all department heads can be expected on the bridge. Outside of such situations, it is not atypical for enlisted personnel to make up two-thirds of the bridge crew.
Shanev is classified as a sector patrol escort on paper and is expected to perform the typical duties of a customs patrol ship. These include trade regulation enforcement, border patrol, interception of smugglers and other unlawful actors, escort of refugees to safe harbour, rescue of ailing vessels and the occasional skirmish with pirates. However, the ship carries armament far heavier than is required for entanglements with common pirates and smugglers, and while she lacks the supply endurance of a long-range exploration ship, she is capable of keeping pace with explorers on shorter-duration missions. In practice, Shanev's secondary role is as an exploration convoy escort. While not equipped as an explorer herself, the ship’s armament, agility and defensive systems are sufficient to handle the defenses of large modern warships, allowing Shanev to travel in tandem with more specialized research vessels and provide primary defensive cover in emergency situations.
