U.S.S. Kinistin
Akira-class Heavy Cruiser
Starship Registry NCC-82382
A Block III Akira-class heavy cruiser in service with the United Sector Taskforce, stationed at Starbase 514.
History
USS Kinistin is one of the later models of the Akira class, coming from Block III of the ship’s production. She was produced in 2387 at the ADSB Integration Facility, New Aberdeen Fleet Yards, Aldebaran. Design refinements produced following the war included the implementation of the SSWR-37-C warp core, allowing for a more efficient warp field to be projected forward of the main hull, with the effect of reducing Cochrane field shearing and enabling somewhat higher sustained cruising speeds.
Commanded by CAPT Ananda Srisuwan, the Kinistin launched as an exploratory vessel equipped with runabouts and shuttles in place of its strike fighter loadout, scoped for exploration of the Zenas Expanse. The ship operated as a second-line surveyor and mothership for smaller landing parties on xenoscience and geological missions, primarily gathering samples and conducting field research, with few combat engagements. The Kinistin undertook two five-year tours of the Expanse, with a layover between, before CAPT Srisuwan retired. The ship was reassigned to CAPT Narr Proll and dispatched to the Eridan Belt to assist as a second-line survey ship.
As tensions with the Klingons escalated, the Kinistin was reassigned to the Xarantine Sector following a periodic refit and carrier wing turnover, re-equipping with modern strike craft. The ship provided presence patrols along the Klingon border before being drawn directly into the fighting following the outbreak of hostilities. Kinistin served in several battles throughout the conflict, the most notable being a major battle over Archanis, in which CAPT Proll was severely injured and subsequently discharged for medical reasons. CMDR Della Cardenas assumed command through the remainder of 2408 before command was assumed by CAPT Kai-Mindaugas Liepa following major repairs at Utopia Planitia.
The Kinistin returned to the front lines in 2409, serving throughout the Klingon conflict and accumulating several battle stars and unit service ribbons. By the appearance of the Dyson Spheres, the ship was withdrawn to a supporting role in Romulan space, operating primarily in an anti-piracy role as part of efforts to support the emerging Romulan Republic.
By 2419, with the retirement of CAPT Liepa, the Kinistin was recalled to New Aberdeen Fleet Yards to undergo a full modernization refit. The ship was re-equipped with more modern computer and warp propulsion systems, modern phaser banks and more efficient torpedo auto-reloaders, as well as more efficient and compact sensors and replacement of extraneous crew quarters with new laboratory space. These refinements took approximately two years and significantly increased both the ship’s performance and her versatility.
Following the refit, the Kinistin was assigned to CAPT Ohsala Rinn for regular presence patrols in the Bajor Sector, then reassigned in 2422 to Starbase 514.
